We ServeRoss F. DiMarco ScholarshipRecognizing Humanitarian QualitiesTwo scholarships are being offered to high
school graduating seniors, residing within the boundaries of Lions District
14-M, which is comprised of Fayette, Greene, Somerset and Washington Counties
Pennsylvania. No more than one
scholarship for any one county. Two $1,000.00 scholarships will be awarded
to seniors that exemplify the characteristics espoused by Lions Clubs
International: creates
and fosters a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the
world promotes
the principles of good government and good citizenship Preference will be given to applicants who
are members in good standing of a Leo Club. This scholarship is intended to assist with
tuition. The check will be written
in the name of the student. The
student must present proof of acceptance into a post-secondary school. The student cannot have received
scholarships totaling more than one full year’s tuition to his/her school of
choice, at the time of the awarding of this scholarship. This scholarship is not necessarily intended
for the top academic student. Lionism

Answer the following questions in short answer, sentence form: Indicate the activities in which you have been involved in
high school and include any office(s) you have held. How do you plan to finance your education, e.g.,

The narrative must be in HANDWRITTEN, essay form and 300 words or
less on this application. Use an

2008 All required proof of earnings must accompany this
application. Proof of academic standing must accompany this application. Proof of acceptance to an accredited school of higher
education must accompany this application. The Ross F. DiMarco Scholarship Committee will inform the
recipient of the scholarship. Presentation
of the check, in the amount of $1,000.00, made payable to the student and school
will be made at an appropriate occasion. Only members of the Ross F. DiMarco Scholarship Committee
will see applications. All
personal information will be held in strict confidence. The scholarship is awarded based on a point system. 45 points
maximum for accurate completion of the application, including required
financial, academic and acceptance documentation.
Financial need, special circumstances or extra-ordinary expenses are
considered in this category. 15 points for
class rank in the top 1/3 of the class, 10 points for class rank in the middle
1/3 of the class and 5 points for class rank in the bottom 1/3 of the class.

NEWS RELEASE Selection Completed for Ross DiMarco Scholarship--2007
The selection for the second annual $1,000.00 Ross F. DiMarco Scholarship has
been chosen. Totally funded by the
Ross F. DiMarco Fellowship, it is available to any high school student residing
within the boundry of Lions District 14-M, comprised of Fayette, Greene,
Somerset and Washington Counties. The
winner is Jenna Russell, daughter of Mrs. Wanda Russell of West Brownsville.
Jenna is a charter member and president of the California Leo Club.
A 2007 graduate of California High School, she plans to attend the
University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA and study Politics, Philosophy,
and Economics .
Among the many recognitions Jenna has received are: graduated
as Class Valedictorian; is the recipient of
Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Award and the Sam Walton Community
Scholarship. She placed first with
a perfect score at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science competition and
was the Rotary Club’s student of the month.
She was the recipient of the Elks National Scholarship and won the
varsity cheerleader and principal’s award.
She was a member of The Future is Mine; peer jury and served as vice
president of the Model United Nations and National Honor Society.
Co-captain of the Academic League, she also served as president of the
Spanish Club and was Editor in Chief of the school newspaper.
The DiMarco Scholarship is awarded to a senior that exemplifies the
characteristics espoused by Lions Clubs International.
Those being: creates and
fosters a spirit of understanding among peoples of the world; promotes the
principles of good government and good citizenship; takes an active interest in
the civic, social and/or moral welfare of the community; and serves their
community without personal financial reward.
Preference will be given to applicants in good standing of a Leo Club.
The scholarship is awarded on a point system:
45 points maximum for accurate completion of the application, including
required financial, academic and acceptance documentation.
Financial need, special circumstances or extra-ordinary expenses are
considered in this category. Five
points are awarded for each dependent child, including the applicant attending
post-graduate school at the same time the applicant is attending;
15 points for class rank in the top 1/3 of class, 10 points for class
rank in the middle 1/3 of the class
and 5 points for class rank in the bottom 1/3 of the class;
25 points maximum for the narrative about the applicant’s intended
career; and 10 points if applicant is a member in good standing of a Leo Club. This year of competition saw 27 applicants— 2 from Somerset County, 17 from Washington County and 8 from Fayette County. Due to the acceptance/success of this program, the DiMarco Fellowship committee intends to offer two $1,000 scholarships next year. 2006 Ross F. DiMarco Scholarship Recipient Announced The winner of the First Annual Ross F. DiMarco Scholarship is David M. Carroll, son of David and Nancy Carroll, of Bentleyville, PA. David is a member of the Bentleyville Leo Club and a 2006 graduate of Bentworth High School. David will be attending Washington & Jefferson College as he begins his path toward becoming a Pediatrician. David will be awarded a $1000.00 scholarship in accordance with the guidelines of the scholarship. The Ross R. DiMarco Scholarship, is totally funded by the Ross F. DiMarco Fellowship, and is available to any high school graduating senior, residing within the boundaries of Lions District 14-M, which is comprised of Fayette, Greene, Somerset and Washington Counties, Pennsylvania. Tthis fist year of the scholarship, 23 applications were received as follows: Greene County - 3 applications, all from West Greene High School; Somerset County - 6 applications, Meyersdale High School – 1, North Star High School – 2, Shade Central High LIONS CONTRIBUTE TO PURCHASE OF SERVICE DOG
Kay Laskody-Treasurer of District 14-M We Serve, Rhonda Cole-President Wbg. Lions Club And Megan Young-Recipient of the Lions Contribution. Members of the Waynesburg Lions Club and District 14-M "We Serve" made a substantial contribution for the purchase of a 'service dog' to aid Megan Young of Greene County. Megan who is 21 was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis at the age of three. Between the age of three and fourteen, she had two surgeries to remove the tumors. She then had an inoperable tumor resulting in loss of use of her right fingers, weakness in the entire right side of her body, and loss of sight in her right eye. The service dog will help in her everyday activities. The dog will be able to catch Megan if she falls, bring her the phone, warn her of seizures, as well as assisting her going up and down stairs and giving her support when walking. The service dog will be purchased from the Susquehanna Service Dogs. |
