MESSAGE FROM DG ROBERT E. RAFAIL

Fellow Lions, Lioness, and Leos,

I want to begin my year by thanking each of you for allowing me to serve as your District Governor in 2010 – 2011. I am looking forward to meeting and working with each of you as I visit your clubs and as we continue the rewarding task of serving others.

I also want to thank those of you who have accepted my invitations to serve on the Cabinet, to become a Committee Chairperson and those who will serve on committees, or have helped me prepare for this year in any way. I understand and appreciate that this is a great personal sacrifice and inconvenience for you and your families. Truly, I recognize your knowledge, experience, dedication, and commitment to serving and inspiring others and respect and value you for all that you do. Without you, there would be no me and no 14-M.

By the time you read this, I will have returned from the International Convention in Sydney, completed my training, and will have taken the oath of office to serve. Hopefully, by then, I will have a better understanding more about why International President Sidney L. Scruggs, III has chosen as his theme this year "A Beacon of Hope." For now, I am satisfied in believing that he chose this theme knowing that we as members of District 14-M will continue to light the way for those who are less fortunate or who are in need. But in order for us to continue and improve how we accomplish this, we must redirect ourselves towards the fundamental principles of our motto, WE SERVE. This will take a great deal of effort, but I know our District is up to the challenge.

I believe this year will once again prove that the Lions, Lioness, and Leos of District 14-M are the shining beacons within our communities and throughout the world. Our words and all that we do clearly demonstrate this. No matter how insignificant what we do may seem to us, our actions and accomplishments have great impact. We may see evidence of this by the smiles on the faces of people we help or in the eyes of someone that we may have inspired to serve. As you are performing service projects within your community, please remember that you are teaching others how to serve as well.

For this reason, I have chosen as my personal theme "Learn, Serve, and Inspire Hope." Each day as we serve, we learn from what we do, we give hope, and we inspire our fellow members and people from within our communities to follow in our footsteps.

Please allow your personal light to shine brightly and continue to light the way for others so that they may continue to have hope. Far too often we focus only on membership and forget about serving and inspiring others. This year, I would like to encourage you to seek a healthy balance between the two by developing new service projects to demonstrate to others what we as Lions, Lioness, and Leos really do and who we are.

Each of us chose to accept the invitation to become a member of this great service organization because we wanted to serve others and have been inspired to do so by an experience in our lives, by our religious beliefs, or by others who has been a role model for us, including our parents, families, teachers, or friends. Like many of you, my inspiration to serve has come from a combination of all of these. Although many of those who have inspired me to be the person that I am are no longer with me, what I have learned from them will long endure. I will eternally be grateful to my mother, Harriet for instilling in me the values, morals, and sense of responsibility that I have, to my sponsor Lion Tom Dolfi for providing me with the opportunity to serve, and to PID Ross for serving as a great teacher of Lionism and for encouraging me to accept leadership roles. I am sure that you had similar inspirations in your life. Do you recall how you became inspired to serve? More importantly, do you know how you will inspire others to follow? I pray that you and I will inspire others to learn, serve, and inspire hope. Now is the time to light the way.

Finally, I want to remind you that I am here to serve you and will perform my duties to the best of my ability. Being human, I may stumble along the way, but with your help, we will be strong and will accomplish much. I welcome your suggestions and will do whatever I can to make this a successful year. I hope to see you at the Banner Exchange on July 11th and also at the Reorganization Picnic on August 15th.

Yours in Service and Lionism,

Lion Bob, District Governor 2010-2011

MESSAGE FROM FIRST VDG MARLA STANKUS

Dear Fellow Lions, Lioness and Leo’s

It’s July already and by the time you read this our District Governor Bob Rafail will be back from Australia filled with information to pass on to all of us. While our DG has been away he has not forgotten us, because the e-mails keep flowing in. I know DG Bob is going to do an outstanding job this year and I wish him great success. Welcome home District Governor Bob!

The year has gone by very quickly as everyone says that it does. It’s been nice meeting so many Lions, Lioness and Leo’s that I have not met before and again meeting those that I have met and I look forward to meeting a lot more of you.

I know it will be a busy year, I’m already finding that out with so many places to visit and meetings to attend but I look forward to them and learning so much more about Lionism.

Just a reminder that I need everyone to send in a copy of their reports to me so that I can include the information in the Club News section of the District Newsletter. There were many clubs that did not submit a report this month, please make it a point after your last meeting of the month to get your report done and sent on so it’s not forgotten. The membership numbers are also taken from that report.

Speaking of membership, please make an effort to invite new potential candidates to join you at a meeting and tell them the benefits of being a Lion, Lioness or Leo. Tell them personal stories that have touched you or other members of your club. I know we all have stories we can share, because "We Serve".

I look forward to serving this District in any way that I can and giving all the support to District Governor Bob as he faces the many challenges that await him.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Yours in Lionism,

Vice District Governor Marla

MESSAGE FROM SECOND VDG ERIC M. DOLFI

I want to thank everyone for voting for me. I am truly blessed to have received your vote for Second Vice District Governor. I know that I have big shoes to fill (Robert has size 16 shoes) and I hope that the support in the district will truly be magnificent.

How many of you have read the whole Helen Keller speech from Sandusky, OH? All of you should know that she called the Lions Knights of the Blind. I want to point out a piece of the speech that most of us wouldn’t remember: I suppose you have heard the poetic legend which represents Opportunity as a capricious lady who knocks at every door but once, and if the door isn't opened quickly, she passes on never to return. And that is as it should be. Lovely, desirable ladies won't wait, you have to go out and grab 'em. I am your Opportunity, clothed in visibility. I am knocking at your door. I want to be adopted. The legend doesn't say what you are to do when several beautiful Opportunities present themselves at the same door. I guess you are to choose the one you love the best. I hope you will choose me. I am the youngest, and the opportunity I offer you is full of splendid possibilities of service.

This would be the first paragraph. I think that as Lions we can take something from this. This could help us with our membership. It talks about us knocking on a door but only once and that door Closing fast. How true is it that we turn to someone who we think would be a great Lion and we are told, yeah I would like to come to a meeting but not today. How many of us go back a second or even a third time to ask that same person to join? What about that person who told you no the first time Have you ever thought about asking them just to come along to a function, or buy them dinner at one of your meetings? If we are not careful, the doors to membership could dry up. Where would we turn if we need help on a park project or selling strip tickets? Just think about this.

The Second part of the First paragraph says:

I am your Opportunity, clothed in visibility. I am knocking at your door. I want to be adopted. The legend doesn't say what you are to do when several beautiful Opportunities present themselves at the same door. I guess you are to choose the one you love the best. I hope you will choose me. I am the youngest, and the opportunity I offer you is full of splendid possibilities of service.

This part of the speech gives us direction in retention. As members of a club, we need to make sure that our members are involved. We need to make our members feel wanted and make sure they stay involved. Every member is special and wants to be adopted. They want to feel needed. If a member doesn’t feel appreciated or needed, you might lose them. They can lose focus and never come back. We need that beautiful opportunity in our clubs to grow. Make sure that everyone, young or old, haa a voice. This truly will become a splendid possibility of service.

I know that the last thing you want to hear about is membership and retention. Membership is truly what keeps us going. I want to challenge every lion to try and change the way you ask a person to join. I want you to think back to the speech of Helen Keller. Don’t let that door shut before you give your best effort. Anything you can do will truly make your club a better place to be. Once again thank you for your votes and let’s have a great year.

Yours in Service and Lionism,

First VDG Eric

SPECIAL CONVENTION

NOTE from DG Bob: I received the following article from the State Office for release to the Lions Clubs in District 14-M and have made arrangements for a Special Convention to be held on August 15, 2010 and have included specifics as detailed below:

TO: The lions Clubs of District 14-M

FROM: District Governor Robert E. Rafail

SUBJECT: Special Convention of the Multiple District

As outlined in the International Multiple District and Multiple District 14 Constitution and By Laws the Council of Governors has the authority to call for a Special Convention of the Multiple District. The Special Convention must be called for a special reason.

The 2009-2010 State Council has voted to call for a Special Convention to be convened for the purpose of endorsing a candidate for the office of 2nd Vice President of Lions Clubs International.

It has been 28 years since our Multiple District has had the opportunity to present a Lion to be elected as a 2nd Vice President of Lions Club International. The process will begin by endorsing Lion Harold "Otter" Ott PID at the Special Convention to be conducted in each Sub-district the week of August 9th to August 15th 2010.

The Special Convention is a very simple process. I am asking all the Lions Clubs in our District to send a full compliment of delegates from each Lions Club to vote at the Special Convention in our District. Each Past District Governor also has a vote over and above the Lions Club compliment of delegates. Each Lions Club secretary and Past District Governor will receive their delegate cards from the State Office. There will be no meetings or speeches and each Lion delegate attending the Special Convention will register, certify and vote to endorse our purposed candidate.

Our District Special Convention will be conducted August 15, 2010 at Shady Grove Park, 280 Morgan Station Rd, Lemont Furnace, PA 15456 from the hours of 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM.

LETS STRIVE FOR A 100% PARTICIPATION FOR OUR DISTRICT.

NEW LCI CLUB SUSPENSION POLICY

An amendment to the suspension policy was approved to become effective on July 2, 2010 at the last LCI Board Meeting in April. The policy changed consideration for suspension from 150 days to 120 days, and cancellation to follow on the 28th day of the month following suspension.

The amended policy states: A club, which has an unpaid balance in excess of US$20 per member or US$1,000 per club, whichever is less, outstanding past 120 days will be suspended, including the suspension of the club's charter, and the rights, privileges, and obligations of the Lions Club. In the event the club does not acquire good standing, as defined by board policy, on or before the 28th day of the month following suspension, the club's charter will be automatically canceled.

Clubs may make arrangements to avoid suspension by sending payments according to the terms established by the association. You may review the details of the policy on the Lions Clubs International Web site, by emailing the Membership Billing Department or calling 630-203-3820.

NOTE: The following information was released at the International Convention. Clubs should pay particular attention to the Global Service Action Campaign information. President Scruggs is focusing attention this year on SERVICE and he is asking each CLUB to develop a NEW SIGNATURE SERVICE PROJECT as a way of making our clubs more visible to the public. With this in mind, he has suggested 4 specific areas of focus throughout the year. THE FIRST IS IN AUGUST. In conjunction with the emphasis on service this year, President Scruggs has also introduced the BEACON AWARDS, a CLUB EXCELLENCE AWARD, and a new LIONS INTERNATIONAL ESSAY CONTEST for visually impaired children between the ages of 11 and 13 with the same theme as the Peace Poster Contest (POWER OF PEACE). Below is an overview of these exciting new programs:

Global Service Action Campaigns

For more information, go to http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/common/pdfs/scr002.pdf

The focal point of this year’s Presidential Theme "A Beacon of Hope" is service. To show the strength of our worldwide network and to shine our light even brighter, Lions have the opportunity to participate in four special service action campaigns throughout the year.

August – Engaging our Youth Invite Leos and youth in your area to help organize and participate in a service project. Projects may include school or community facility cleanups or a visit to a home for senior citizens or a children’s hospital. Allowing youth to develop and lead a service project enables them to learn skills while emphasizing the role of service.

October – Sharing the Vision Plan vision health projects and work with the visually impaired. Many Lions already celebrate World Sight Day in October. This is a great month to organize a vision screening, volunteer at a nearby Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center, organize an eyeglass collection or an activity to benefit the visually impaired in your community.

December/January – Relieving the Hunger Organize food drives and projects to feed the hungry. With the downturn in the global economy, many hunger relief organizations are finding it difficult to keep up with demand. Help alleviate hunger by planning events around the end and beginning of the calendar year to collect and distribute food.

April – Protecting our Planet Implement projects that improve and protect the environment. Organize a highway clean up, plant trees or plan a community "Earth Day" event to collect recyclables such as aluminum cans, plastic bottles, used cell phones and batteries.

Additional information and resources will be available for each Global Service Action Campaign as the campaign month nears. But begin planning now with these helpful tips:

Don’t start from scratch. Expand an existing Lions project or partner with another local organization.

Make it hands–on. The more Lions who participate, the more meaningful the project will be and the more it will help re-energize club members. Also invite members of the community to participate to generate membership interest.

Be visible. Projects promoted to the public and held in visible areas help promote who Lions are and what we do. Make sure project signage is highly visible and be sure to invite the media to your service activity to promote Lions and their impact.

Don’t forget recognition. Remember to thank and give recognition to Lions and non-Lions who made the project a success.

Create excitement. Consider asking clubs in your district to conduct projects on the same weekend or week to create greater public awareness.

Measuring Lions Service Impact

Lions do so much to shine a light where there is darkness and despair. Help spread the word! This year, be sure your club secretary uses the newly redesigned Service Activities Report (July 2010 launch) to report the club’s service activities, especially projects related to the service action campaigns. Clubs that submit projects related to the service action campaigns through the online Service Activities Report are automatically nominated for the Beacon Awards. For further information about the Global Service Action Campaigns, please contact the Service Activities Division at programs@lionsclubs.org or (630) 468-6893.
