Message from Our District Governor

Lions, Lioness, Leos,

The groundhog saw his shadow and we all know what that means. But I’m sure glad it didn’t affect the Stare Council Meeting in Washington , Pa. A great job was done by all the committee members and District 14 M put on a great Council meeting.

Let’s think spring and plan on attending the District Convention in March and Spring party in April. Both these events will be held at Hidden Valley Resort. Information is in this newsletter regarding these events, so please take note. Ads for the Spring Party booklet are being sold- 1VDG Bob is handling this.

The new club in the District is up and running. They are having their first fundraiser on February 13 from 11AM-6 PM at Hoss’s Restaurant in Belle Vernon. Cards can be obtained from Lion Shelly Carney by calling 724-258-4699. Cards need to be presented when you pay your bill and then the club will receive 20% of the total bill.

International President Eberhart Wirfs is concerned about the decline in membership in North America . There are clubs in our District who need to work on increasing their membership to ensure that their club remains strong and active. The MERLO team is ready, willing and able to come to your area and assist with this. Please contact 1VDG Bob and get the ball rolling!

As most of you are aware, 2VDG Marla sustained some injuries from which she is recuperating. We wish her well and I’m sure she would appreciate your prayers and cards.

Hope to see you all at the February Cabinet Meeting.

Paint a Bright Future by continuing to MOVE TO GROW.

Yours in Lionism, DG Rich

MESSAGE FROM FIRST VDG ROBERT E. RAFAIL

Fellow Lions, Lioness, and Leos,

I want to extend my sincerest thanks and congratulations to Chairperson PDG Gloria Saloom, to the dedicated members of the 2010 State Council Planning Committee, to all of the volunteers, to the clubs and individuals that donated cookies and/or Chinese Auction Raffle Baskets, to those who attended the State Council Meeting, and to anyone else who helped to make the February 2010 State Council Meeting such a great success.  District 14-M lived up to its nickname MAGNIFICENT.  IP Eberhard Wirfs has been emphasizing the importance of teamwork and this is just one example of how the Lions, Lionesses, and Leos of District 14-M work as a team.

I received my first M&A Report from the newly charted Monongahela Donora Area Lions Club and want to wish them all the best as they become the 52nd Lions Club in District 14-M.  I encourage each of you and your clubs to welcome and support them as they start off on this exciting journey of providing service.

Finally, I mentioned in last month’s newsletter that it is time to begin the process of electing officers for the 2010 - 2011 year of Lionism.  Check your Club’s Constitution and Bylaws or refer to LCI’s Standard Club Constitution and Bylaws (available online) to determine what procedures you need to follow to nominate and elect officers so that you are able to submit your PU-101 (Officer Reporting form also available online) to LCI and to me (First VDG Bob not to DG Rich) no later than May 15th.   Your club secretary can also submit the information electronically using the MMR reporting method.   If you need assistance contact your ZC or RC.

I hope to see you at the Cabinet Meeting on February 13th, the District Convention on March 20th, and at the Spring Party on April 10th.

Yours in Service and Lionism,

First Vice District Governor Bob

Message From Second Vice District Governor Marla Stankus

The next cabinet meeting is coming up soon, February 13th.  I hope to see many of you at that meeting.  I want to thank everyone for your cards, prayers, phone calls and e-mail messages.  They were all very appreciated and needed.  It’s been a long process in which I hope things are about to get better.  On Saturday, January 18th I stepped onto my back porch’s only step and was admiring the grass sticking out of the snow when I found myself crumbled on the ground.  I was picked up off the ground by my neighbor and rested a moment then continued on to the State Council Planning Meeting.  I enjoyed breakfast but by the time it was time to go to the meeting I could not put any weight on my left foot.  I am so thankful for the assistance of 1VDG Bob for getting a wheel chair from the hotel and getting me to my car.  He offered as many did to drive me to the hospital but I drove myself.  I was then told I had a broken foot and the tendons were torn from the bone.  They put me in a splint and gave me crutches and started to send me on my way until they realized that I could not walk with the crutches.  They made me call someone to drive me home.  (Not being able to walk with crutches should have told them something!).  My son and family showed up to drive me home.  One day my husband is out of town this would happen.  So I stayed in on Sunday but Monday was a holiday and I had so many things planned for the weekend and then couldn’t do any of them.  My sister asked me to ride with her to do some errands so I said okay.  (I never listen to my husband, when he says don’t do anything.)  Well my niece walked to the door to accompany me to the car and I got half way there, lost my balance and fell backwards on the concrete.  Soon as I fell I heard my back crack.  All I could think was my back just broke and State Council is coming up and the next cabinet meeting and my job.  I being stubborn would not let them call the ambulance and made my way back into the house.  As soon as I sat in the chair I knew I had to call the ambulance.  My sister had to leave but was coming right back but when she left she called my son.  He came right over and we called the ambulance.  I got immediate service at the hospital, they even took me to x-ray before a doctor ordered them.  My wonderful family called my husband at work (which I told them not to because I told them exactly what he would say, and I was right).  When I returned from x-ray my husband was there and the doctor came in after reviewing the films and said he had good news…there is nothing wrong, you can go home.  We all said there has to be something wrong because I can’t move.  Finally he said he would try to get me admitted by my family doctor.  He later returned and said he look at the films again and thinks he saw a slight fracture so he could admit me.  Well many more tests, numerous doctors later I was told I broke the L2 bone and broke my tailbone.  This all happened on Monday.  On the following Saturday I was released from the hospital wearing a boot to my knee and a turtle brace around my torso.  No crutches this time, I got a fancy walker.  This Monday they are going to do a procedure on the L2 bone where they put cement in to hold the bone together.  After that I should be pain free and get rid of the brace.  I am praying that it happens like it does with 99% of their patients.

I am someone that puts things off till the last minute and this has shown me that don’t put things off you never know what may happen to change your plans.  Those prospective Lions I wanted to invite to our meeting have now been delayed.  Doing the work of Lions is something that I enjoy doing and want to be a big part of.  I will be at the State Council Meeting, looking a little strange maybe but the District’s official chauffer, PDG Bauer offered to get me there.  Until the brace is off I cannot drive or work.  I’m sure I will wear my self down during those three days but I know it will be worth it.

I was sorry to lose three members of my club to the new Lions Club but I know they will be an asset to the new club.  Since we meet on a different night maybe they will visit once in awhile.  I urge everyone to support the new club.  If possible support their first fundraiser on February 13th.

                                                                        Yours In Lionism,

                                                                        Second VDG Marla

Environmental and Drug Awareness Poster Contest

  PENNSYLVANIA LIONS OF DISTRICT 14-M

As chairman of the District 14-M Environmental and Drug Awareness Program,I am again asking each club in our district to sponsor a school and conduct a“Drug Awareness Poster Contest”.
The Poster Contest is a unique way to further our goal to increase the knowledge of our youth
in regards to the harms of drug use and abuse. This knowledge can and will help to curb
a national disaster ... that of misuse of legal and illegal drugs.Drug Abuse is everywhere ... in our larger cities and yes, even in our rural communities!Lions International has been involved with Drug Awareness since 1983.Through research, it has been shown that young people must be reached before their Middle School Years. This is a very startling and scary realization ... that at the ages of 10, 11, & 12,harmful and even fatal substances are available to our youth!

DRUG AWARENESS POSTER CONTEST RULES

6. Each club should submit only a First, Second and Third Place Winner from each school to the district for judging no later than WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2010 to be eligible for the contest.

Lions Form Eyeglass Collection Partnership with Wal-Mart

Dear Lion:

Lions Clubs International is pleased to announce that it has entered into an agreement with Wal-Mart to collect used eyeglasses from the public at specified Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores throughout the United States .  This new program will enhance the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Program, enabling our association to collect increased quantities of usable glasses for humanitarian missions to developing nations.

·         Commencing January-February 2010, co-branded collection boxes, bearing the LCI, Wal-Mart and Sam's Club logos, will be available in the 2,500 US Wal-Mart stores and approximately 500 Sam's Clubs, with vision centers.  These new boxes will replace Lions collection boxes currently in place at the specified stores. For Wal-Mart stores and Sam's Clubs without in-store vision centers, existing Lions collections will continue at the discretion of the store managers.

·         Wal-Mart will ship the collected eyeglasses to their distribution centers, where they will then be delivered to the nearest Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers for sorting, cleaning and processing.

·         Usable glasses will be available for Lions and other optical missions to developing nations, where the glasses will be dispensed to children and adults free of charge.

·         The Lions/Wal-Mart co-branded program is aimed at members of the public. Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores will not be able to accept or ship Lions club collections of eyeglasses from other locations in the community.

If you are involved in eyeglass collection, thank you for your continued support of this project. We encourage clubs to maintain their collection sites throughout the community and send the glasses to the nearest Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center.  These collections have had a direct impact on the strength and success of the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Program.

LCI can help to promote your community collections by posting drop-off locations on the association's Web site at the Club Locator. Clubs can simply provide us with their information via the Lions Recycle For Sight Club Participation Form and we'll post up to six collection sites. Or, send an e-mail to: eyeglasses@lionsclubs.org.

For further information about the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Program, or to start a collection campaign in your club or district, please contact the Health and Children's Services Department.
